The Friday 56 – Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

The Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted over at Freda’s Voice. The rules are simple and go something like this.

Friday 561.  Grab a book, any book.
2.  Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that’s ok.)
3.  Find any sentence, (or a few, just don’t spoil it)
4.  Post it.
5.  Add the post url, not your blog url to the Linky.
6. Tweet it #Friday56 (not an official Freda’s Voice rule)

This weeks Friday 56 is a book I read many years ago when I was doing my student teaching. Now I’m using it to help a 5th grader I tutor with reading comprehension. We’re getting way down deep in the text, which is something her 4th grade teacher said struggled with. Hopefully she can get over that hurdle by the time she officially starts 5th grade.

By the end of October the rain had come, falling heavily upon the six-inch layer of dust which had had its own way for more than two months. At first the rain had merely splotched the dust, which seemed to be rejoicing in its own resiliency and laughing at the heavy drops thudding against it; but eventually the dust was forced to surrender to the mastery of the rain and it churned into a fine red mud that oozed between our toes and slopped against our ankles as we marched miserably to and from school.
