Book Beginnings & The Friday 56 – The Gun by Fuminori Nakamura

This year I’m participating in several reading challenges; and this weeks Book Beginnings and Friday 56 is part of my Diversity Reading Challenge and the Mount TBR Challenge. This year I’m making a conscious effort to diversify my reading and tackle the books in my ever-growing TBR pile piles.

I found this book at my public library’s book store. I saw the title and was intrigued. I read the summary and was captivated. I read the first few pages and was hooked. I had to find out what power this gun possessed. I just started reading it yesterday and am finding it difficult to put down.

LAST NIGHT, I found a gun.  Or you could say I stole it. I’m not really sure. I’ve never seen something so beautiful, or that feels so right in my hand. I didn’t have much interest in guns before, but the moment I saw it, all I could think about was making it mine.

Friday 56

I POLISHED THE gun inside my apartment

Of course I used the black cupro cloth that I bought previously holding the gun in my left hand and the cloth in my right hand. While I moved around the apartment, I always carried the gun and the cloth with me, polishing it as I listened to music or watched television. I polished it with both elbows propped on the table, or while I was lying in bed.

Time went by surprisingly quickly this way. I took pleasure in the monotony of the task, repeating a conversation with the gun. Needless to say, I didn’t actually speak aloud to the gun, or even carry on a conversation in my head. The gun was a device, so talking to it was the same as talking to myself. . .

It’s one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve read in a while.

Margaret, I’m not a gun fanatic and it’s hard for me to think about obsessing about one; but the author’s writing style puts you squarely in the characters mind. Great psychological thriller.

Hi Sherry, I love a good mystery, thriller, suspense and so far this has it all for me. It doesn’t make me want to obsess about a gun, but it definitely puts you in the characters head.

Thanks Laurel for stopping by. Obsession is something else. Or maybe the character is obsessing because his life is benign. Who knows? But it’s definitely a captivating read.

Hi Stormi, thanks for visiting. I am really am enjoying it. It’s a pretty short book. If work wasn’t getting in the way I’m sure I would have finished it by now.
