The Friday 56 – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

The Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted over at Freda’s Voice. The rules are simple and go something like this.

Friday 561.  Grab a book, any book.
2.  Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader (If you have to improvise, that’s ok.)
3.  Find any sentence, (or a few, just don’t spoil it)
4.  Post it.
5.  Add the post url, not your blog url to the Linky.
6. Tweet it #Friday56 (not an official Freda’s Voice rule)

This year, I’m finally going to knock The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy off my TBR pile. I bought the book years ago for a book club and never got around to reading it. Or rather other shinny new books caught my attention. I’m reading it as part of my Tsundoku Bingo Challenge and it will satisfy the Sci-Fi square.

Vogon poetry is of course the third worst in the Universe. The second worst is that of the Azgoths of Kria. During a recitation by their Poet master Grunthos the Flatulent of his poem “Ode to a Small Lump of Green Putty I Found in My Armpit One Midsummer Morning” four of his audience died of internal hemorrhaging, and the President of the Mid-Galactic Arts Nobbling Council survived by gnawing one of his own legs off. Grunthos is reported to have “disappointed” by the poem’s reception, and was about to emark on a reading of his twelve-book epic entitled  My Favorite Bathtime Gurgles when his own major intestine, in a desperate attempt to save life and civilization, leaped straight up through his neck and throttled his brain.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, page 58

American War Synopsis from Goodreads:

Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed, ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.

  1. Hitchhiker’s Guide is one of my favorite books! I was thinking of another Douglas Adams book, The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, when I wrote The Fireborn. This might be obvious from my page 56 challenge:
“So I can’t tell about…?” She shook her head. “Or that the Colonel…”
    “No.”
    “How about..?”
    “No.”
    “Or…”
    “No.”
She gave him a stern look, but he could see merriment in her eyes.
“Nice weather we’re having.” Elliot pointed to the blank wall of the van.
